We pick the artist - They pick the music.
UI Picks is curated by the Underground Institute, an international agency for adventurous music and platform for culture. UI Picks episodes are tailored for selected underground radio stations.
HYENAZ are sound designers, techno producers and immersive performers interested in the integration of haptic and somatic practices in the process of performance.
They work primarily with field recordings and interviews in order to keep their musical works site- and content- specific. In the age of COVID, they are exploring how to continue performative practices around touch and borders in the context of virtual space.
The episode features sound clips from Mmakgosi Kgabi, Martini Cherry Furter, Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau, Adrienne Teicher and Mad Kate.
“Our selections are based around the theme of “perimeter” — that space that is just outside of an enclosed circle, a particular identity, an idea, a group. The theme is something we’re exploring for our new audio visual work of the same title, in which we collaborated with three other artists and asked them to dive into a personal area of “perimeter”. We have included excerpts from the pre-production interviews, in which Martini reflects on “the reflected and projected self”, Mmakgosi thinks about “joy”, Adrienne reflects on her relationship to Judaism, Kate explores “sisterhood,” and Simon(e) thinks about the perimeter of perimeter itself”.
