We pick the artist - They pick the music.
UI Picks is curated by the Underground Institute, an international agency for adventurous music
and platform for culture. UI Picks episodes are tailored for selected underground radio stations.
This episode is curated by Eyal el Wahab of El Khat.
The origin of some of these recordings is difficult to trace.
He writes: “The Tin to me means a genre of music made out of junk in its many forms. Music from
the streets, villages and prisons. materials such as tin, metal, wood, plastic etc…
either used from the lack of resources or through traditional customs. In this
compilation there are many tunes mostly from the Arab Peninsula, Africa and Asia. The Tin
is the mother and father it’s the main source influence for contemporary music such as hip hop, rock, techno etc…
Using only what’s around you to express yourself using waste could become gold if you are an open minded”
We are very excited to be hosting El Khat (solo) at the upcoming Underground Institute Festival Dec 8-10 in Berlin,
with self built instruments (that’s Dec 8 at Silent Green, with Ka Baird and DJ Marcelle and the festival opening talk
with Martin Rev, Molly Nilsson, Mueran Humanos and Mary Ocher).
