Much of Europe has been on lockdown, but in refugee shelters the pandemic has brought a doubling down of isolation, deprival and policing. This episode we talk to Jennifer Kamau (she/her) from International Women* Space about the situation inside the Lagers, and why it’s time to close them down.

Hosted by Diana Arce (she/her), Tina Lee (she/her) (Miriam Aced will be back next month!).  Brought to you by Artists Without a Cause, Wählen Gegen Rechts and Migration Voter.

- Corona Reports - IWSpace publishes reports from women* inside the lagers, who became reporters to share what was going on from beyond lockdown and isolation.

- In the Shadow of Corona: IWSpace documented a violent police action inside of one of the lagers where 7 police officers (not wearing protective face masks) and 2 dogs were inexplicably brought to respond to a noise complaint, and a woman was violently constrained in front of several children. This, during the pandemic lockdown and in response to a noise complaint. IWSpace demands answers.

International Roundup

The international response to the murder of George Floyd has been amazing, but we want to see people in Europe get riled up about the racism happening right here- its not categorically different, its the same. George Floyd is also here (TW - video of Mohamed Idrissi being shot by Bremen Police)

-Read up on the history of the entanglement between European and US racism in books like Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi and Hitler’s American Model by James Q. Whitman.

-Two new reports shed light on how police systemically harass Black people and People of Color both in the pandemic and outside of it:

-In France, a new HRW report documents how Black and Arab children are subjected to repetitive, humiliating and baseless police stops and searches, ranging from ID checks to unconsented body checks without cause (which amounts to state-sanctioned sexual assault). In Germany, racial profiling is also endemic.

-Throughout Europe, police and state officials have used the pandemic as an excuse to crack down on marginalized communities, subjecting them to targeted lockdowns, police checks, drone surveillance, and hate speech blaming them for the spread of Coronavirus. The Roma community was particularly targeted, as were migrant and refugee communities and shelters. Read the full report from Amnesty here.
