Shortwaves are radio waves in the frequency spectrum between 1.6 and 30 MHz, and are 10 to 100 meters long. They propagate in two ways: ground waves and sky waves. A ground wave moves across the surface as the ground conducts. A sky wave reaches the ionosphere layer, is mostly returned to Earth and back to the ionosphere and so on. These skips make it possible to reach distant areas up to a distance of 5000 km. Therefore shortwave radio has been a source of inspiration, a topic for research and creation for many years.
David Goren is a radio producer and audio archivist who has been dealing with shortwave sound for 40 years. He has created several shortwave broadcasts for public radio and founded the shortwaveology podcast and website that explores the aesthetics, culture, and history of shortwave radio on its broadcasts and monitoring. David Goren also leads the shortwave shindig - a live mix of shortwave broadcasts from the past and present.
